Dune 2 will fix a fan complaint about the first movie

Dec 14, 2023

"It became a weird priority for me."

Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has promised fans that the sequel will rectify an issue they had with the first movie.

While the general consensus is that Part One did an excellent job transferring Frank Herbert's original novel to the big screen and bringing all the details of its world to life in a faithful manner, it was disappointing not to see the Baliset.

The nine-stringed instrument is played by Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin's character) in the book and has appeared in the TV miniseries version, and some extended editions of the 1984 film. A scene with Brolin playing it was filmed for Part One, but didn't make it into the final cut.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Villeneuve confirmed that a scene with Brolin playing the instrument is definitely in the final cut of Part Two.

He said: "The Gurney song survived Part Two! It became a weird priority for me. But Josh Brolin is a poet and we played it together. It was awesome."

Of course, there are many more novels in Herbert's Dune series, with main character Paul Atreides being the focus of the second and third entries. Does that mean there could be further films from Villeneuve?

"If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream," he said. "Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero, which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it's actually a warning... I will say, there are words on paper."

Although the film has seemingly been completed in the editing suite, Warner Bros has actually delayed it from November to next year, possibly because the Hollywood strikes are going to continue and the actors won't be able to promote it.

Dune: Part Two is out in cinemas on March 15, 2024.
